Typically, when pain lasts for more than 3-6 months, it is likely to be labeled as chronic pain. It differs from the usual cause-and-effect pattern of acute pain. Chronic pain continues long after you recover from an injury or illness, and sometimes it even happens for no obvious reason. A few examples of chronic pain are arthritis, osteoporosis, bursitis, and nerve damage.

Acute pain is the most common. It is your body’s natural protection system – a warning to prevent further harm. It usually comes on suddenly and goes away slowly throughout the healing process. Acute pain also comes with an expectation that healing will occur within a specific time and will not go on forever. Some of the most common causes are sprains, ligament tears, broken bones, surgery, etc.
